Abstract

Currently, most peptide/protein drugs need to be administered in injection form to ensure their bioavailability. It is of great interest to develop non-injectable dosage forms that are easy to administer, have high patient compliance and lower treatment costs. However, the bioavailability of direct non-injection administration of peptide/protein drugs is usually very low, and it is necessary to prepare a drug-loading system with designed functions, such as adding different proportions of enzyme inhibitors, absorption enhancers, etc. to improve bioavailability. Cyclodextrin and its derivatives have been increasingly widely used in non-injection drug delivery systems for peptide/protein drugs due to their ability to form inclusion complexes with guest molecules and their ability to promote mucosal penetration. This article reviews the application of cyclodextrin and its derivatives in non-injection drug delivery systems for peptide/protein drugs in recent years.
