Multi-Year Traceability Of Jiansanjiang And Wuchang Rice Origins Based On Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Technology
Exploring near-infrared spectroscopy for tracing GI rice origins, ensuring authenticity, and protecting brand integrity through advanced analysis models over multiple years.
Study the multi-year origin traceability technology of geographical indication rice to protect the brand benefits of geographical indication rice. Near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy technology was used to screen the characteristic bands related to the origin of the experimental field samples, and within this range, 291 rice samples from Jiansanjiang and Wuchang areas from 2013 to 2015 were studied for origin traceability. The results showed that the experimental field samples had significant differences in origin factors in the range of 5?136 to 5?501?cm-1. Within this range, the correct identification rates of the qualitative analysis model and the cluster analysis model established by the factorization method for Jiansanjiang rice and Wuchang rice are both higher than 97.00%. The correct discrimination rates of the quantitative analysis model established using the partial least squares method for rice in the two regions were 95.83% and 94.00% respectively. Therefore, it is feasible to apply this technology to determine the origin of rice from multiple years.
Introduction to Geographical Indication Rice and Study Overview
In the contemporary agricultural landscape, the protection of geographical indication (GI) products, particularly rice, is paramount for safeguarding brand integrity and promoting regional agricultural heritage. A recent study highlights the application of near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (NIR-DRS) technology in the multi-year origin traceability of GI rice, offering a groundbreaking approach to reinforcing the brand benefits of these products.
The Significance of Geographical Indications in Agriculture
Geographical Indications (GIs) serve as a certification that a particular product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation due to its geographical origin. This distinction not only helps in distinguishing the product in the global market but also plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of rural areas by protecting the livelihoods of local producers.
Methodology: Near-Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy
The study in question focuses on employing NIR-DRS technology to identify characteristic bands related to the origin of rice samples from experimental fields. This method’s efficacy was tested on 291 rice samples collected from the Jiansanjiang and Wuchang areas, spanning the years 2013 to 2015. These regions are renowned for their distinctive rice varieties, which are integral to their cultural and economic fabric. The objective was to establish a reliable and efficient model for tracing the origin of rice over multiple years, thereby ensuring the authenticity and quality of GI rice products.
Research Findings and Model Efficacy
The findings of the study are significant. The experimental field samples demonstrated notable differences in origin factors within the spectral range of 5,136 to 5,501 cm-1. Utilizing this spectral range, the study successfully established qualitative and quantitative analysis models based on the factorization method and partial least squares method, respectively. For the Jiansanjiang and Wuchang rice samples, the correct identification rates of the qualitative analysis model and the cluster analysis model exceeded 97.00%. Moreover, the correct discrimination rates of the quantitative analysis model for rice from these two regions were impressively high, at 95.83% and 94.00%, respectively.
Implications for GI Rice Brand Protection and Agricultural Practices
These results affirm the feasibility of applying NIR-DRS technology for the origin traceability of GI rice across multiple years. This method not only enhances the ability to protect and authenticate GI rice products but also contributes to the broader objectives of preserving agricultural biodiversity and promoting sustainable farming practices. By ensuring the traceability and authenticity of GI rice, producers can maintain a competitive edge in the market, thereby securing their economic benefits and reinforcing the cultural heritage associated with these products.
Broader Impact on Global Agricultural Policies and Practices
The implications of this study extend beyond the realms of agriculture and food science. They touch upon issues of intellectual property rights, rural development, and global trade policies. As the demand for GI products continues to grow on the international stage, the need for robust, scientifically validated methods for product authentication and origin traceability becomes ever more critical. This research not only paves the way for enhanced protection of GI rice brands but also sets a benchmark for the traceability of other GI products, thus contributing to the integrity and sustainability of global food systems.
